Frequently Asked Questions
1.General Questions
What is Akuraa?
Akuraa is a curator-led Pan-African image licensing platform. We work exclusively with African photographers, paying them 60% of licensing revenue (vs. industry standard 20–35%). Every image comes with cultural context, legal compliance, and ethical sourcing guaranteed.
Who can use Akuraa?
Akuraa serves institutions and organisations: museums, galleries, publications, educational institutions, brands, and creative agencies seeking authentic African imagery with cultural integrity.
How is Akuraa different from stock platforms like Getty or Shutterstock?
- Curator-vetted quality (not algorithm-driven)
- 60% to photographers (vs. 20–35% industry standard)
- Cultural context included (photographer stories, location details, cultural notes)
- Invite-only photographers (quality over volume)
- Ethical, transparent licensing (clear terms, fair compensation)
Is Akuraa a stock photo site?
No. We're a curated Pan-African visual ecosystem. Stock sites commodify imagery; we steward visual narratives with cultural intelligence and institutional trust.
2.Licensing & Usage
What types of licences do you offer?
We offer tiered licensing based on usage: Editorial Use (news, education, commentary, museum exhibitions, academic publications), Commercial Use (advertising, marketing, packaging, brand campaigns), and Extended Use (merchandise, products, unlimited distribution). Each licence is perpetual — one-time payment, unlimited duration within agreed terms.
Can I use images for commercial purposes?
Yes, with a Commercial or Extended licence. Editorial licences are restricted to non-commercial use (journalism, education, commentary). Check the licence type before purchase.
Do I need a model release?
Model release requirements are indicated for each image. “Yes” = commercial advertising permitted (signed release on file). “No” = editorial use only. “Not Required” = no identifiable people in image.
Can I get exclusive rights to an image?
Licensing is non-exclusive by default. For exclusive rights, contact hello@akuraavisuals.com for custom licensing arrangements.
How long can I use a licensed image?
Licences are perpetual — one-time payment, unlimited duration. You can use the image forever within the terms of your licence. You cannot resell, sub-licence, or transfer rights to third parties.
3.Subscriptions
How do institutional subscriptions work?
Subscriptions include a set number of download credits per year: Small (£1,000/year, 50 downloads), Professional (£2,000/year, 100 downloads), Institution (£5,000/year, 250 downloads), Enterprise (£10,000+/year, 500+ downloads, custom).
What happens if I exceed my download limit?
Additional downloads are charged at £25 per image beyond your included credits. You'll be notified when approaching your limit.
Do unused downloads roll over?
Yes, unused downloads roll over for 12 months from subscription start date.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes. Email hello@akuraavisuals.com with 30 days' notice. No refunds for partial periods, but you retain access through the end of your billing cycle.
